History of the Galway Cycle
Over €500,000 has been raised for various charities over the past 24 years. Last year over €83,000 was raised for Pieta House, the centre for the prevention of Suicide, Lucan. Originally set up by ten ambitious students in 1987 the Maynooth Students for Charity Galway Cycle has continuously gone from strength to strength.

2011
Charity: Pieta House, Crisis Centre for Self-Harm or Suicide President: Shane Lynn Amount raised: €83,000 towards the development of facilities to help those who are suicidal or self-harming. -
2010
Charity: National Breast Cancer Research Institute President: Ciaran Pollard Amount raised: €81,300 enabled the purchase of essential testing equipment (Guava EasyCyte Flow Cytometer) in order to aid research in the early detection of breast cancer. -
2009
Charity: Cystic Fibrosis Association of Ireland President: Eimear Ryan Amount raised: €78,000 towards the building of 4 en-suite wards in the grounds of Our Lady's Childrens Hospital, Crumlin, as well as the refurbishment of an existing area of Galway University Hospital for isolated rooms. 2008
Charity: Headstrong President: John Doyle &Dominic Meehan Amount raised: €80,009 used to refurbish an old laundry in Mary St for the Jigsaw Initiative: providing a drop-in centre in Galway city for young adults to discuss any personal problems they may be going through. Famous Faces: Kieran Fitzgerald and Joe Canning (Galway GAA), and Adrian Flavin (Connacht Rugby) -

Charity: Stepping Stones ABA School, Kilcloon, Co. Kildare President: Shane Quigley Amount raised: €81,079 used to build a playground in school providing ABA teaching for autistic children. Famous Faces: RTÉ Newscasters John Finnerty and Anne Doyle -
2006
Charity: Laura Lynn Childrens Hospice Fund President: Brian Casey Amount raised: €67,537 used towards the development of a "home from home" hospice for children with life limiting conditions or illness, and for whom curative treatment is not possible.

Charity: Fighting Blindness President: John McCormack Amount raised: £14,300 (= €18,160) for research into diseases causing blindness in children and adults Famous Faces: Moya Doherty from Riverdance at launch -

Charity: Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin President: Eamonn Carroll Amount raised: £13,000 (= €16,510) used for research into children’s foundation Famous Faces: Eamonn Coughlan -
1998
Charity: ISPCC President: Ger Griffin Amount raised: £10,000 (= €12,700) used for Childline service for children. Childline was changing to a 24 hour a day service and the money raised was used to purchase extra equipment and fund the training of the extra volunteers that were required. 1997
Charity: Meningitis Research Foundation President: Micheal Sheridan Amount raised: £10,000 (= €12,700) - used for research into the causes of meningitis. The cycle was also used as a means of promoting awareness of the symptoms of meningitis - 10,000 information cards were given out.
