Training for the Cycle

It is a long way to Galway (120 miles!) and training for the cycle is absolutely essential if you are not going to be a burden on the cycling pack and support crew. In addition cycling in packs is very different to cycling alone. For these reasons anyone planning to cycle to Galway must attend the training cycles.

Cycles depart from the Maynooth college gates (old campus) at the stated times below - sharp. All are welcome to attend. Please have the essentials listed below. New cyclists are particularly welcome - the pace and distance will be appropriate, and the more experienced cyclists are there to encourage you and give you advice. No one will be left behind, so don't let fear hold you back!

All potential cyclists must attend at least two of the five arranged mandatory cycles before the Galway Cycle weekend. They will give cyclists an opportunity to measure their own fitness, and teach them the basics of riding in a group. Anyone who does not attend at least one of these training cycles will not be permitted to cycle. Please read the Rules and Etiquette for Safe Group Cycling.

Training Essentials:

  • Cycling helmet - compulsary
  • Appropriate gear, especially any light rainjacket and gloves (these don't have to be expensive cycling gear)
  • Roadworthy bike (preferably a racer!)
  • 2 spare tubes (approximately €5 each) and a pump appropriate for your bike

See the Advice page for more detail.

All training cycles depart from old college gates at 10am.

The dates for the training cycles are available on the galway cycle calendar - see the left sidebar, the "Get Involved Page", or HERE!
